Friday Inspiration

I recently displayed a picture of a very gorgeous pink living room , and by chance came across photos of the rest of the house, which I just have to share. This romantic haven hails from the Netherlands. Trust you will have a lovely autumnal weekend!

Friday Inspiration

This is the home of Kamilla Byriel from Denmark, one of the names behind the Stella Nova fashion label. A feminine, floaty haven of a home in my opinion!

(It just dawned on me that these Friday posts of mine have for some reason been recently featuring homes of people with careers in fashion, quite unintentionally!)

Jam Factory

Spicy Blackcurrant Jam

1 litre of blackcurrants
2 large pears
1/2 dl water
6 dl sugar
1 cinnamon stick

1. Peel and chop up the pears.

2. Mix all the ingredients in a pan and allow to simmer over a low heat for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

3. Remove from heat. Stir well. Allow to stand for 15 minutes before spooning into warm, clean jars.

P.S. My jaw dropped when I spotted these Cath Kidston plates at a local department store (Stockmann's), stashed almost on floor level in the furthest corner of the crockery section. ( As if CK goodies weren't hard enough to get one's hands on over here anyway...) I am a happy girl!

On the Coffee Table

This week we've all been down with the flu and I've had a lot on in the evenings, but now at last it feels like being back in the land of the living. Homemade apple pie starts the weekend off quite nicely.

And what could be a better pick-me-up than a few new books! The first two, Junk Style by Melanie Molesworth and The Relaxed Home by Atlanta Bartlett have actually been out for a while now, and I justified getting the compact (hence cheaper) versions just because they looked so appealing. And Atlanta Bartlett is definitely a shabby chic guru for me... But I did come to realize that size does matter when it comes to coffee table books, and flicking through the pages doesn't give quite the full pleasure when you have to squint!

Junk Style is packed with beautiful images and encouragement to source flea markets, auctions and salvage yards. Using an object in a novel way is an inspiring thought, such as in the image below where a former gate now serves as a rather lovely bedhead.

The Relaxed Home is all about comfortable, romantic rooms. Neutral backgrounds with splashes of colour and floral patterns. Nothing too fussy or over-the-top perfect.

My main object of desire was, however, Vintage Fabric Style by Lucinda Ganderton and Rose Hammick. They say never judge a book by its cover but this time round that was one of the sole things that beckoned me to get the book! (Dreaming of a similar blanket, or two, or three...)

Luckily, the content wasn't a let-down either. Lots of inspiring images covering each room and some special occasions and a few step-by-step projects that looked appealing even for a beginner like myself. And as someone inexperienced in sewing I enjoyed the fact that the book also features instructions on different seams, edges and stitches for altering vintage fabrics.

I realize this ended up rather long, well done for making it this far! - I wish you a relaxing, inspiring weekend!
P.S. You can click on the images to get a closer peek.

Pleasures in the Post

Just a quickie - today the post brought a pile of goodies including wallpaper samples and a colour chart from Farrow&Ball. I have read so many praises about their paints and perfect traditonal tones that I wanted to find out for myself. I figured that if feeling more budget-conscious I can always take the chart with me to the local paint shop and gamble at matching a near enough shade.

Also the latest issue of Lantliv landed in the post box. Somehow I've felt a little disappointed with recent numbers but I thought these rose-inspired pages were rather sweet.

I also received a few goodies from Amazon - more on these tomorrow!

We had the treat of having my parents over for the weekend again - it's not only nice to see them but also offers the rare opportunity for us to get out a bit without the children. We enjoyed Sunday lunch in these rather idyllic surroundings with lake views. The food wasn't bad either!

Friday Inspiration - Home of Malene Birger

The home of Danish fashion designer Malene Birger has been described as a mix of 20s New York, 40s Paris and a hint of Morocco - definitely eclectic.

Lazy Sunday

Afternoon walk nearby,

followed by a steaming pot of tea.

P.S. Last night I went to see The Painted Veil, based on the novel by Somerset Maugham. The scenery, settings and costume were so inspiring! Although one couldn't help wonder how the heroine Kitty managed to wear those beautiful linen dresses without a single crease even after an arduous journey to the foothills in China in the middle of a cholera outbreak. Nevertheless, the on-screen wardrobe is something definitely to aspire to and enough of a reason to see the film!
