Autumn days

This autumn I've been filled with gratefulness for old, solid friendships and for a number of new people  suddenly stepping into my life, who are like kindred spirits already. I feel enriched. P.S. The café photos are from Villipuutarha, weekend brunch there on a grey morning and I was transported to another world :) 

Tänä syksynä olen ollut erityisen kiitollinen vanhoista uskollisista ystävistä ja siitä, että elämääni on yhtäkkiä astunut useampi uusi ihminen, jotka ovat kuin sieluntovereita heti ensi kättelystä. On rikas olo. P.S. Kahvilakuvat on Villipuutarhasta, oli harmaana viikonloppuaamuna kuin keidas, jossa pääsi hetkeksi ihan toiseen maailmaan.

Daughter's room progress & inspiration

We managed to get the wallpaper up in our daughter's room this weekend. The lamp will probably go elsewhere and the room is still looking rather grown-up, but I guess it will start looking like a child's nest once all her thing have found their place. One more layer of soap for the floor, the vent needs a cover, a few other tiny adjustments and we're done.

Viikonlopun aikana saatiin tapetti tytön huoneen seinään. Tuo lamppu ei todennäköisesti huoneeseen tule jäämään ja muutenkin näyttää aika aikuismaiselta vielä, mutta eiköhän siitä vielä lapsen huone tule, kun tavarat löytävät paikkansa. Vielä yksi kerros suopaa lattiaan, hormin ritilä paikoilleen ja muuta pientä silausta, sitten on valmista.

Welcome weekend!

At home today, the floor in our daughter's room is now finished, as is all the painting. It looks like we'll get wallpapering at the weekend.

 (Michelle was asking about the floor after a previous post, and for anyone else who might be interested - we first applied layers of lye, followed by oil with a white pigment, then soap, which we'll keep cleaning the floor with in the future. All of these are by a Danish company called Trip Trap, which can be bought under the name Faxe in Finland, and Woca at least in the U.K.. (You can find out more here ) 

And let me show you a glimpse of some recent chair finds, the one on the left from an online auction site, and the two dark ones from a skip in our yard, so all in all, they cost next to nothing.

With our living room still in shambles, this wonderful nook from the home of fashion designer Elise Gug is just so perfectly inviting.  

Today we're spending a mummy&daughter day, and tonight it's finally Midnight in Paris for me.

August has taken a chilled vibe, I so love the dark, long, velvety evenings and a good excuse to burn candles again. We found this little charmer of a doll in a throw-away box outside a cute little shop selling vintage children's toys in the old town of Stockholm. I think it's eagerly waiting to move into our daughter's new room, which we have now painted and partially paneled. We also got someone to sand the floor last week, so it's now ready for layers of lye, white oil and soap. And then for a bit of wallpapering.


Elokuu on sujunut leppoisasti omalla painollaan, nautin niin tummanpuhuvista illoista, kynttilätkin pitänyt hakea naftaliinista. Näin veikeä kaveri löytyi Tukholman vanhasta kaupungista vanhoja leluja myyvän liikkeen poistolaarista. Se odottelee jo pääsyä tytön uuteen huoneeseen, joka on nyt maalattu ja osittain paneloitu. Viime viikolla kävi lattian hioja, seuraavaksi vedellään pintaan lipeää, valkoöljyä ja suopaa. Niin ja tapetotointiakin luvassa.

Midsummer moments

It was supposed to be Midsummer in town, but we ended up driving towards the wooden town of Tammisaari yesterday, taking the idyllic, windy roads back home late in the evening. And today some strawberry picking on a farm, we now have a fridge and freezer abounding in red goodies. No doubt yummiest when eaten fresh or with a dollop of cream, but any favourite recipe ideas for those stashed in the freezer are more than welcome! Anna Järvinen provided my midsummer soundtrack.


Piti tulla kaupunkijuhannus, vaan ajelimmekin eilen Tammisaaren suuntaan ja sieltä idyllisiä kärrypolkuja takaisin. Tänään taas Tuusulaan päin mansikoita poimimaan. Nyt on vatsat ja pakastinkin punaista pullollaan, hyviksi todettuja mansikkareseptejä otetaan kernaasti vastaan. Kotimatkalla huikohetki Halosenniemen rantakallioilla, siellä tulee aina yhtä sanomattoman vaikuttunut olo. Anna Järvinen säestää. 

My own photos seem to stay hidden inside my camera these days, but I was finally inspired to sort them out as a little Sunday evening pastime. The wind is still cold on one's back, but you can definitely feel (or at least imagine) that spring is on its way! I'm suddenly spurred to wash our windows and air our eiderdowns, and there seems to be a new spring in the step after a long long winter. At the weekend, we carried on with our everlasting renovation, my dear man painted our daughter's future room and I spent hours poring over wallpaper catalogues. Oh the difficulty of choosing THE one! Luckily there was also time to eat well, walk by the sea, sit in a café and stare at some movies. How was your weekend? 

Omat kuvat tuppaavat nykyään jäädä kameran kätköihin, nyt iski vihdoin sunnuntaipuhteena inspis käydä niitä vähän läpi. Kylmä puskee edelleen selkään, mutta kyllä tuolla kevään voi jo aistia! Minut on yllättänyt himo kuurata ikkunoita ja tuuletella vuodevaatteita ja muutenkin tuntuu, että askeleeseen ilmaantunut taas uutta virtaa. Viikonloppuna jatkettiin hieman ikuisuusremppaamme, mies maalasi tytön tulevaa huonetta ja minä plarasin tapettikirjoja oikein olan takaa. Voihan päättämisen vaikeus! Onneksi oli aikaa myös syödä hyvin, kävellä merenrannalla, istua kahvilassa ja tapittaa leffoja. Mitä sinun viikonloppuusi kuului? 

Preparations

 

The weekend evolved into a manic sorting and cleaning session in preparation for our daughter's birthday party and the arrival of the kids' grandparents from England today. Now that we got rid of piles of stuff and with the sun lingering on the skin, it feels like there's so much more room to breathe again. The trip to the attic is like an exciting little adventure, creaky lift up to the seventh floor, taking in the views (it's actually an excellent spot on fireworks' night)  and once there, a waft of warm wood, mellow sounds and magically filtering light.

Viikonloppuna iski varsinainen raivauspuuska, oli tiedossa tyttären kaverisynttärit ja tänään Englannin isovanhempien saapuminen talviloman viettoon luoksemme. On taas enemmän tilaa hengittää, kun päästy ylimääräisestä roinasta ja aurinkokin viipyilee iholla. Vintille kipuaminen on aina kuin miniseikkailu. Natisevalla hissillä seiskaan, näkymien hämmästelyä (tuonne on mahtavaa kiivetä ilotulituksia katsomaan, jos ei ulos asti halaja) ja perillä lämpöisen puun tuoksu, vaimentuneet äänet ja maagisesti siivilöityvä valo.

I'm not quite sure who's waiting more eagerly to open the first window from the advent calendar, me or the kids from theirs (which is actually still waiting to be hung up and stuffed with something today). At the weekend, we celebrated my birthday and moved some furniture around for the occasion. The old cupboard (but fairly new to us) ended up in its intended place next to the little kitchen, where it seems to fit rather snugly.  I rummaged for some fairy lights up in the attic, but our Christmas star seems to have done a runner!


En ole ihan varma kumpi odottaa ensimmäisen luukun avaamista enemmän, minä omasta kalenteristani vai lapset omastaan (joka pitäisi tänään vielä ripustaa sullottuna jollain). Viikonloppuna juhlistettiin synttäreitäni ja kemujen kunniaksi vaihdettiin edellisellä viikolla vähän järjestystä. Vanha mutta meille vielä melko uusi astiakaappi pääsi lopulliselle paikalleen uuden pikkukeittiön viereen ja pääsee nyt vähän paremmin oikeuksiinsa. Valot sain pengottua vintiltä, mutta joulutähti on tehnyt totaalisen katoamistempun!

Ready, set, LONDON!

The new Toast catalogue arrived at the perfect moment to get me into a London frame of mind and I've been busy making lists of interesting nooks to explore. And there's a wedding to attend to and plenty of family and friends to see. We're traveling tomorrow and I'll catch up with you in just over a week!

I could just wrap myself in this autumn. It's still been gentle, revitalising, maple leaves only beginning to turn red. Jars filled with candles, pinecones and summer memories.


Tähän syksyyn voisi ihan kääriytyä. Vielä se on tuntunut lempeältä, antanut virtaa, vaahteratkin vasta punastumassa. Purkeissa sulassa sovussa kynttilöitä, käpyjä, kesämuistoja.
